Some of New Zealand's most premium wine is made in Martinbourgh where the warm days and cool nights are combined with hot summers, dry autumns, and just the right amount of rain to create great wine. In particular, the Martinbourgh area is known for Pinot Noir. There are 28 vineyards in Martinbourgh alone!
We decided it would be fun to rent bikes and do a "self-guided" tour of some of the vineyards in the area.
We picked up our bikes and maps and set off for our first tasting at the Palliser Vineyard.
Typically at each tasting you start with a small taste of a variety of white wines progressing to the red wines.
In between the vineyards, we biked on lovely roads where we could view the vineyards, olive trees, and mountains in the distance.
Our self-guided bike tour included a lunch prepared by the wife of one of the bike tour company's owners. We were told our lunch would be available at TK vineyard, so we planned to arrive there at about 1 pm.
We were picturing some packed sandwiches and possibly some fruit, but we were so surprised to find out our lunch was a feast complete with a tablecloth for us to spread on the table overlooking a scenic area!
After lunch, we were off to more tastings, a street fair in Martinbourgh, and finally, a concert at one of the vineyards.
After returning our bikes, we had a chance to clean up, relax, and then head back to Martinbourgh for dinner at a Thai restaurant.
