We left Auckland today and drove south on our way to Tongariro National Park (about 4.5 hours). We stopped, about halfway at Hobbiton where The Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogies were filmed.
When the location scouts found the Alexanders' spectacular 1250 acre sheep and beef farm, it was clear that It was the perfect location for Director Sir Peter Jackson's adaptation of these works by J.R.R. Tolkien.
The natural mounds worked well for the construction of 48 Hobbit holes. The farm had beautiful trees, a lake, and a wonderful bucolic setting for The Shire, home of the Hobbits. Here are some photos from our day.
